Port Shepstone
Backpackers South Africa
Situated on a headland overlooking the wide mouth of the Mzimkulu River,
Port Shepstone was developed as a port in the 19th century. Sugar, lime and
marble were shipped out from here, but rail proved more practical, as the
river dumps silt into the harbour. This is where the rail line from Durban
ends and the narrow gauge Banana Express train takes over. The Banana
Express leaves from the main beachfront and steams inland through scenic
hills and sub tropical vegetation.
